Abstract

MIRANDA, Rui Gonçalves. The pas in Pessoa. Diacrítica [online]. 2012, vol.26, n.3, pp.263-282. ISSN 0807-8967.

This article extrapolates from Maurice Blanchot’s meditation on the pas (step/not) and aims to use such notion as a point of entry and articulation for the analysis of the writing in several instances of Pessoa’s text. It attempts to address the conditions of (im)possibility of different poetic structures (degrees of lyric poetry, scale/ladder of depersonalization) which are rendered in the text. It attempts to trace several steps and pauses, crossings and suspensions, while viewing the literary text as a performance and not as a mere point of passage for meanings or presences beyond the text. Writing is thus understood as a differential and negative process in which the promised presences (dramatic poet, Chevalier de Pas) necessarily do not go beyond (forms, the materiality) of the text, in which they are always already writing. The several pas (step/not) illustrate thusly the movement of and within the text, which advances by emphasizing writing’s aporetical feature, its excess and irreducibility of meaning, ever other.

Keywords : FernandoPessoa; pas; Maurice Blanchot; Jacques Derrida; textuality; poetry.
