Abstract

SANTOS, Pedro. “Se” and “só se” conditionals: a question of nexus. Diacrítica [online]. 2015, vol.29, n.1, pp.354-377. ISSN 0807-8967.

I discuss the semantic contrasts between “se” (“if”) and “só se” (“only if”) non-counterfactual conditionals on the basis of evidence provided by Portuguese, although offering an account which is arguably translinguistic. Two kinds of semantic nexus between a conditional's antecedent and consequent are identified, a deductive one and an explanatory one, and it is argued that the latter plays a crucial role in accounting for the above-mentioned contrasts.

Keywords : non-counterfactual conditionals; deductive nexus; explanatory nexus.
