Abstract

SANTOS, J. A.  and  DUARTE, C.. Degradation and surface protection of wood exposed outdoor. Corros. Prot. Mater. [online]. 2013, vol.32, n.1, pp.10-18. ISSN 2182-6587.

In this article are described the ancient techniques that allowed conservation and preservation of wood for centuries, and an overall view of the new concepts of protection and finishing of wood is presented. The long-term behavior of different types of finishes is shown with practical examples, emphasizing the great differences between the concept of varnish rigid forming film in comparison with the results of drying oils with natural pigments. Finally, it is given a perspective of highly promising developments for the next future, such as protections of pigment-based on nano technology, or products based on siloxanes and silanes impregnated in the surface layers, which enhance water repellency, a property highly beneficial to long term behavior of the finishing.

Keywords : Wood; Finishing; Protection; Durability; Degradation.
