Abstract

CORREIA, M. J.; SALTA, M. M.  and  BAPTISTA, A. M.. Stress corrosion cracking of anchors. Corros. Prot. Mater. [online]. 2014, vol.33, n.1-2, pp.5-11. ISSN 0870-1164.

The stability of a ground anchored structure is influenced by the integrity of the anchors whose performance depends on the project details, employed materials, environment characteristics, and quality control, especially of the corrosion protection systems. Several errors such as project flaws, faulty construction or the use of improper materials may lead to a defective corrosion protection, which is often the main cause of ground anchors rupture. The present case study shows the rupture of steel anchor bars in service by stress corrosion cracking, due to their defective protection system, particularly near the anchor bars coupling areas under the interface of different protection components.

Keywords : Corrosion Protection; Stress Corrosion Cracking; Anchor Bars; Fractography.
