Abstract

LOTT, Wanessa Pires; CARDOSO, Ruth Macedo  and  MIRANDA, Helen Suany. Sociability of the Brazilian Amazon: Parties of the elite of Pará. Forum Sociológico [online]. 2022, n.41, pp.25-36.  Epub Dec 30, 2022. ISSN 0872-8380.  https://doi.org/10.4000/sociologico.10764.

The end of the 19th century was marked by significant changes in Brazil. With the coup of the Republic (1889), the country gradually changed its values, which influenced the urban organization of cities and new forms of sociability of the population. In this context, the present work aims to present the possibilities of festive sociability in the period from 1919 to 1921 in the city of Belém do Pará. The article has Simmel’s studies as its main theoretical approach. The analysis of the magazine A Semana: Revista Illustrada between 1919 and 1921 was used as a method of research, once it is the period with the more copies available for the consultation and it has several viable sources for an analysis in the scenario reported above. It was concluded that in the period that was studied the parties of the local elite were identified as a way of approaching European culture and the perpetuation of social hierarchy. Among the many parties, the research highlighted the Carnival parties, the tea and dance meetings, the banquets and the weddings held in private social clubs in the capital of Pará. The research has significant relevance because there are few studies using this journal, as well as the focus on elite parties.

Keywords : Belém do Pará; sociability; parties.
