Abstract

PAPPAMIKAIL, Lia. Intergenerational relationships, family support and the transition of young people to adult life in Portugal. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2004, n.46, pp.91-116. ISSN 0873-6529.

This article seeks to give an account of the co-ordination between family relationships/cultures and transitions to adult life, simultaneously integrating this into the debate on the limits and boundaries of the individualization of youth trajectories. In effect, on the basis of the exploratory results of the Portuguese participation in a comparative European research task (Families and Transitions in Europe), particular emphasis is given to family support strategies and the values, representations and attitudes associated with them by parents and children, in an intergenerational coming together of the issues related with the (personal, professional and school) life trajectories of the young people.

Keywords : Intergenerational relationships; transitions to adult life; family support; individualization.
