Abstract

CARMO, Renato Miguel do. Gender and the rural environment: the case of a village in the Alentejo. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2007, n.54, pp.75-100. ISSN 0873-6529.

This paper describes how the different gender roles have changed in a rural community over the last three decades. Firstly, our study analyses the main changes related to the modernization and urbanization of the social structures that have taken place in the southern Portuguese village of Albernoa (situated in the Alentejo region). Secondly, we compare these changes with the alterations that have occurred in rural daily life, in particular in connection with social practices.

Keywords : gender; rural; sociability; Alentejo.
