Abstract

MORALES, Fernando C. Ruiz. Flamenco artists “abroad”: a cultural network. Etnográfica [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.2, pp.317-338. ISSN 0873-6561.

In this paper I deal with flamenco in a foreign and multicultural context, by exploring several case studies. It is the result of an ethnographic work in Belgium over the years 2007 to 2010. Flamenco is a code that provides a collective framework for all the artists that play in that field. But this does not mean that they share meanings or patterns of action. Local artists adopt different attitudes towards the flamenco code, and they use diverse ranges of careers and responses. Their positioning is not only a consequence of their individual strategies, but they are influenced by structural factors such as ethnicity.

Keywords : flamenco; artistic code; cultural network; ethnicity; migration; artistic field.
