Resumen

PIVA, Felipe Paes. Psychic illness in graduation and social markers of difference at the Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas (FFLCH-USP). Etnográfica [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.2, pp.529-551.  Epub 22-Ago-2023. ISSN 0873-6561.  https://doi.org/10.4000/etnografica.14044.

This article focuses on a certain phenomenon in the university environment: the mental suffering of its students. With empirical research with undergraduate students at the Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas (FFLCH-USP) between 2020 and 2021, the article aims to understand to what extent there is a specific interaction between mental health and the experience of discrimination associated with social markers of difference (race, class, gender, sexuality, among others) through the coexistence and narratives of these students. The aim is to apprehend the relational character of these sufferings that occur in the university environment and the complex ways in which such markers are intertwined in these narratives. It is based on the understanding that this phenomenon is not homogeneously established among students, but the combination of certain markers point to a greater susceptibility to psychic suffering, derived from specific precarious conditions of certain social groups as opposed to others in the university context and of the precariousness in the structures of inclusion and permanence in the university.

Palabras clave : mental health; social suffering; anthropology of health; social markers of difference; university; social inequalities.
