Abstract

HENRIQUES, Luís. A mulher oitocentista em Cenas de África? Romance Íntimo. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2023, n.49, pp.133-152.  Epub July 31, 2023. ISSN 0874-6885.  https://doi.org/10.34619/694l-wnd7.

The novel Cenas de África? Romance Íntimo by Pedro Félix Machado is a love story set against the backdrop of Angola and the metropolis in the XIX century. Its portrait of Luandan society includes female characters who reflect the experiences of women who inhabited the city at the time. Being bourgeois characters, this study seeks to understand whether they identify with the social model prescribed for women by nineteenth century bourgeois values. Since their abilities were considered inferior to those of men, it was said that they were specially gifted for domestic management. It is concluded that the female characters generally adhere to this model.

Keywords : literature; Luanda; bourgeoisie; nineteenth century; Cenas de África.
