Abstract

PACHECO, Mariana et al. Mental health of health professionals in care COVID-19: an integrative review. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.3, pp.831-842.  Epub Dec 31, 2023. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/23psd240304.

Being a healthcare professional during the biggest pandemic in recent times puts the worker in a situation where their physical and mental health is exposed. This research has as its guiding question: what is the existing production in the scientific literature on the mental health of health professionals during the new coronavirus pandemic? This is an integrative literature review. To survey the studies, the PICO strategy was used. A search was carried out for descriptors crossed with the Boolean operators AND and OR with articles published in 2019 and 2020. Initially, 607 articles were identified. Of these, 68 duplicates were excluded. After reading the title and summary, 39 remained to read the full text. In the end, 24 articles were selected for analysis. Data emerged on sleep, psychological distress, being a frontline professional, the influence of age/sex and social support on health conditions, as well as data on negative feelings such as anxiety, depression, resilience, Burnout, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and reports of previous experiences in public health problems. It is concluded that these studies reflect how the pandemic influenced the physical and mental health of healthcare professionals, providing data on loss of sleep conditions, development of suffering and psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. On the other hand, access to PPE predicted better physical health and job satisfaction, leading to a lower level of distress; Social support and being in a serious relationship can be considered protective factors.
