Abstract

SILVA, Joaquim Ramos. Economic ties with Brazil: a strategic imperative for Portugal. Rev. Portuguesa e Brasileira de Gestão [online]. 2012, vol.11, n.2-3, pp.02-20. ISSN 1645-4464.

The economic relations between Portugal and Brazil since the early 1990s have been subject to both general and focused analysis. This article discusses their new developments since the early 2000s, particularly after 2005, given the increasing international position of Brazil and the good health of its economy and the crisis of the Portuguese economy, exacerbated by the international crisis and the debt European sovereign crisis. The analysis is done in the light of relevant theoretical models, particularly regarding the asymmetrical relationship between the two countries (small versus large economy) and the influence of common "cultural" features (language, history and culture). In fact, in the period examined, bilateral relations have shown a remarkable growth especially in certain sectors and in recent years, proving to be relatively immune to the crisis and revealing new facets. The paper also highlights the importance of these relations for both countries, but especially its strategic importance to Portugal.

Keywords : Portugal; Brazil; Internationalization; Trade and Foreign Direct Investment; Common Language; Cultural Factors.
