Abstract

LAINS, Pedro. The end of the accession, 1986-2016. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2015, n.48, pp.115-121. ISSN 1645-9199.

How can we evaluate the participation of the Portuguese economy in the European Union, over the last 30 years? The main purpose of this essay is to look for ways to answer this crucial but necessarily uncertain question. For that purpose, we analyze the evolution of the national and international circumstances in which Portugal’s EU accession took place, its main short-term effects, and the political and economic developments that occurred thereafter. This exercise leads to the conclusion that participation in the European Union is above all the current form of integration of the Portuguese economy in the wider global context.

Keywords : Portuguese economy; European integration; European Union.
