Abstract

REIS, Célia. The Extradition from Macau to China in the early twentieth century: Colonial practices between affirmation. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2015, n.48, pp.123-137. ISSN 1645-9199.

This article analyzes the extradition from Macau to China, which was included the Treaty signed in 1887; however, it was based more in ‘custom’ than in legally defined processes. This question integrated the difficult relationship between Macau and China and the xenophobic movements; because of that, some of the extradition processes assumed a political character. In response to pressure, the Portuguese authorities sought to implement new rules. However, the interference from multiple authorities, combined with that anti-Portuguese action, led to more refuses. Simultaneously, we find a division of the Portuguese authorities, between the affirmation of Portuguese sovereignty by deciding on extradition or the granting of priority to an agreement that would allow the delineation of space.

Keywords : Colonialism; Macau; China; extradition.
