Abstract

ROLDAN, Jesús Manuel Bermejo. Portugal and the Chaco conflict. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2017, n.56, pp.129-148. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2017.56a08.

This article analyzes the Portuguese diplomatic actions undertaken by Dr. Augusto Vasconcelos in the final stretch of the Chaco conflict. Analyzing the documentation of the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this paper starts with the hypothesis that, although the principal interest of Portugal in the Chaco conflict was the search for peace, the diplomatic work done to solve it gave to Portugal the opportunity to improve its position in the international framework and to take away the ascendancy of Spain within the bloc of Latin American countries.

Keywords : Chaco; Portugal; League of Nations; diplomacy.
