Abstract

MARTINS, Andreia. Diplomacy and conflict: the future of the Iran nuclear deal. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2020, n.68, pp.105-123.  Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2020.68a08.

The article aims to explain the recent moments of tension between Iran and the United States in the context of the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program (JCPOA), signed in July 2015. That pact and the model of negotiation that sustained it are here analysed from a theoretical and historical point of view, at a time of deadlock where the agreement is not actually being implemented, after the unilateral withdrawal from Washington and the gradual retreat from Tehran, but also where there seems to be no effective alternative to the negotiations. It is argued that maintaining the agreement - or starting new negotiations within the same framework - will be decisive in resolving the nuclear issue and avoiding that a future incident may possibly origin a military escalation or confrontation in the region.

Keywords : diplomacy; nuclear programme; Iran; sanctions.
