Abstract

MOTTA, Bárbara; CAMPOS, Bruno  and  LEMOS, Débora. The special relations US-Israel and Yom Kippur War. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2021, n.70, pp.127-141.  Epub June 30, 2021. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2021.70a09.

The State of Israel has built a strong diplomatic alliance with the United States, embodying what the literature calls a ‘special relationship’, marked by political, military, and eco- nomic support, but little is said about this relationship during the Yom Kippur War. This article presents some elements that can fill this gap, thus advancing two arguments: (i) Yom Kippur is an important event to show that this special relationship is not unrestricted, (ii) it is precisely during Yom Kippur that both countries established some boundaries for a space of possible and non-prejudicial disagreement. The article analyzes the diplomatic documents declassified by the National Security Archives, in 2003, reconstituting both positions of Israel and the U.S.

Keywords : United States; Israel; special relationship; Yom Kippur War.
