Abstract

CHARREU, Leonardo. The animalistic (dis)figurement of Sofia Torres' painting: strangeness and repetition. Estúdio [online]. 2021, vol.12, n.33, pp.106-116.  Epub Mar 31, 2021. ISSN 1647-6158.

Sofia Torres' painting focuses essentially on the figuration of a very particular animalistic imaginary that, crossed by a basic concept - the uncanny - obliges us to a relatively complex analysis and that, consequently, cannot be exhausted in the mere appreciation of evident technical virtuosity. In fact, it is what seems to vibrate in the first perceptive moment and in the first contact with her paintings. The strangeness and repetition, in the set of her work, still short, but pointing to instigating paths, are also assumed as secondary concepts that are articulated with the main concept. They rescue and challenge figurative painting to emerge from a kind of representational torpor and to experience iconographies that disturb us.

Keywords : Painting; Figuration; Uncanny; Strangeness; Repetition.
