Abstract

CALDAS, João Vieira; PINTO, Maria Rocha  and  ROSADO, Ana. The Joanine multifamily building. Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal [online]. 2014, vol.ser2, n.1, pp.125-150. ISSN 2183-2176.

Built from the scratch to house several families, the so-called “income building” knew a booming development in the first half of the eighteenth century. One may say that it was during the reign of D. João V that were laid the foundations of the urban multifamily housing, later systematized with the pombaline “income building”. In this geographical and chronological context stands out the common three/four storeys building with two dwellings per floor that may be regarded as a pre-modern invention and is the heart of this article.

Keywords : Lisbon historical neighbourhoods; Eighteenth Century; Multifamily housing; House plan.
